Budgeting For Your Trip

When applying for a Broadreach Foundation scholarship or financial aid, it is important to understand all of the potential costs involved. Please remember that scholarships can only be applied towards tuition. All on-trip meals, activities and accommodations are included in tuition for a Broadreach program.

All scholarship recipients will be responsible for the additional expenses outlined below.

Airfare
Round-trip airfare to the program destination is the responsibility of the recipient. Some programs also have required internal flights that take place during the trip. Contact the Broadreach office for more information about internal flights.
College Credit
All students receive academic instruction on academic programs and are expected to participate; however, the cost of the official college credit transcript is not included for high school programs. Students may opt to pay an additional fee to receive college credit on a high school academic program.
Gear & Equipment
Due to the nature of the activities on a Broadreach program, there may be gear required for the trip that students do not already own. Many programs typically require students to bring things such as hiking shoes, rain jacket, sleeping bag, head lamp or flashlight, bathing suit and quick dry clothing (i.e. active wear).  Although this is by no means an extensive list, it is important to keep this in mind when budgeting for a program.

For programs that include scuba diving, equipment is either included or available for rent from Broadreach for a one-time fee. For photography programs, an SLR camera is required. Additionally, many academic programs have a required textbook to accompany the course. These can range in price and can often be purchased second-hand.
Spending Money
Most students bring $100-$150 on program for purchasing personal items and souvenirs while on program. We also recommend putting aside $20-$100 for travel day expenses (i.e. baggage fees, departure taxes, other airline fees and food while in the airport).
Additional Certifications
For our sailing and diving programs, all sailing certifications and primary scuba certifications (PADI Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver) are included in scholarships. Additional fees may apply for other certification cards.
Passport
All students must have a passport to travel on a Broadreach program. It is important to ensure that the passport is valid for a minimum of six months beyond the end date of a student’s program. All Broadreach Foundation applicants that do not currently have a passport are strongly encouraged to begin the passport application process as soon as possible as it can be a lengthy process.
Travel Vaccinations
Broadreach does not require that students have specific vaccinations for travel; this is a personal choice, and we suggest that you consult your physician, travel clinic or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for advice on any health precautions related to overseas travel. The CDC can be reached at 800-232-4636, or you can visit the CDC website at http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel for a complete list of health guidelines and recommendations. We suggest waiting to receive notification about your application prior to arranging for vaccinations.
