When is the deadline to apply?

Applying to the Broadreach Foundation is a multi-step process. First students must submit the student application. Applicants will also be required to provide one teacher reference and a copy of last years tax return. The application with current information on scholarships and deadlines can be found on the Application page.

Applications for scholarships for summer 2023 are due on January 31st. All components of the application (Student Application, Teacher reference, tax return) must be received by the deadline in order to be considered for a scholarship.

How many scholarships are awarded each year?

The Broadreach Foundation strives to award as many scholarships as possible each year to deserving students. The number of scholarships awarded is limited by our funding. The majority of the scholarships awarded are partial scholarships. There are typically only one or two full scholarships awarded each year.

How many students apply each year?

The Broadreach Foundation receives a high volume of applications each year. The application process can therefore be competitive. It is important to take your time with your application; we suggest that you follow directions carefully and check your application for errors.

Is there an application fee to apply to the Broadreach Foundation?

No, there is no application fee and anyone that is eligible is welcome to apply.

Can I apply for a scholarship from the Broadreach Foundation to attend a program outside of Broadreach’s offerings (i.e. summer camp, choir trip, sport camp)?

No. At this time, scholarships from the Broadreach Foundation are only available for participation in Broadreach programs. Which Broadreach programs can I travel on with a Broadreach Foundation scholarship?

Students can apply for a scholarship from the Broadreach Foundation for any Broadreach program. For more information on the programs offered by Broadreach, please visit www.gobroadreach.com. Students may either apply for a specific trip or a general category of trip (i.e. marine biology

Does the scholarship award include airfare?

Broadreach Foundation scholarships can only be applied to tuition. Scholarships do not cover airfare. It is recommended that all students research the cost of flights prior to completing the application. Airfare for a Broadreach program from a major airport in the United States to the program country can range from $500 to $2,000.


Additionally, a few Broadreach programs also have internal program flights in which the group is required to fly together during the program. These flights are also not included and must be taken into account when budgeting for a program. What other expenses are not covered by the scholarship?

For some programs, there are expenses in addition to airfare. Common expenses include things such as textbooks, gear, passport fees and travel vaccinations. Most students also choose to bring a small amount of cash ($50-$150) as spending money on program for souvenirs. To find out more about the specific expenses associated with each trip, please contact the Broadreach Foundation for assistance with budgeting.

What is the minimum age to travel with Broadreach?

Students must have completed sixth grade by the beginning of the summer. No programs are available for younger students.

Do I need a passport to travel on a Broadreach program?

Yes. All Broadreach students need to have a passport. It is important to ensure the passport is valid for, at minimum, six months beyond the end of the program. All Broadreach Foundation applicants who do not currently have a passport are strongly encouraged to begin the passport application process as soon as possible as it can be a lengthy process and there are typically additional fees if a passport has to be expedited

What components will I need to submit with the application?

In addition to completing both the initial and secondary application questions, students are required to submit a completed teacher reference form (which is sent out via email) and a copy of the parent or guardian’s most recent 1040 tax form.  Some partner scholarships may require additional components depending on the scholarship.

What criteria are used to select scholarship recipients?

The Broadreach Foundation selection committee reviews all completed application materials. Decisions are made on the basis of both strength of the application and financial need.

When are the scholarship recipients notified?

Recipients are typically notified approximately one month after the application deadline. Some additional scholarships may be offered later in the year based on funds raised and availability.

Can I receive a Broadreach Foundation scholarship if I have received one in the past?

Although previous recipients are not eligible to receive a second scholarship, we strongly encourage these students to contact the Broadreach Foundation for more information and assistance with fundraising for a program.

Are students from outside the USA eligible for a scholarship?

Yes, however, we encourage applicants to review the visa requirements for visiting the various program countries to ensure eligibility to travel. It is also important for students traveling from countries outside the USA to consider any additional flight costs.
